Last Chance to Voice Kinder Morgan Opposition to Federal Government
BC MP launches online tool that lets people know if they are on final pipeline route, in spill zone
BURNABY, BC, April 5, 2017 /CNW/ - Now that Kinder Morgan has filed its final plans for the Trans Mountain pipeline with the National Energy Board (NEB), concerned citizens have one last chance to officially voice their opposition to the route. While the deadline for statements varies by community based on when they were notified by Kinder Morgan, all written statements must be received by late April.
"This is the last chance for British Columbians to let the NEB know that they don't want this pipeline running through their community," says Kennedy Stewart, NDP MP for Burnaby South. "Kinder Morgan's pipeline is a bad deal for BC and not worth the risk we are being asked to bear."
Stewart has launched a new online tool at www.kennedystewart.ca that helps residents understand how they would be impacted by the pipeline and encourages them to submit letters to the NEB. By simply entering a postal code, the site will show whether people are on the pipeline route, in a land spill zone, or in a marine spill zone, for those who live in coastal areas.
"Putting our homes and environment at risk so a foreign corporation can earn billions of dollars in return for a very small number of jobs just doesn't make any sense," continues Stewart. "I want people to know that this fight is not over. Together we can still stop Kinder Morgan."
According to the NEB's website, anyone who has been served notice by Kinder Morgan, or anticipates that their lands may be adversely affected by the Trans Mountain pipeline, has 30 days to oppose the route by filing a statement of opposition. The statement must set out the nature of the person's interest and the grounds for the opposition to the route.
