TORONTO, June 22, 2015 /CNW/ - The Law Society of Upper Canada today presented a degree of Doctor of Laws, honoris causa (LLD), to The Honourable Peter A. S. Milliken, PC, OC, at its Call to the Bar ceremony at the National Arts Centre in Ottawa.
Milliken was honoured for his remarkable contribution to Canadian politics as Canada's longest-serving Speaker of the House of Commons. Milliken's legacy includes a number of landmark rulings, such as Parliament's right to information, which have contributed to parliamentary precedent in Canada and throughout the Commonwealth.
Law Society Treasurer Janet E. Minor awarded the honorary LLD to Milliken, who then delivered the keynote address to the Call candidates.
As part of its Call ceremonies each year, the Law Society awards honorary doctorates to distinguished people in recognition of outstanding achievements in the legal profession, the rule of law or the cause of justice. Recipients serve as inspirational keynote speakers for the new lawyers attending the ceremonies.
Treasurer Minor also addressed the new Calls today, saying: "We celebrate because you are joining our profession," said Minor. "We celebrate because it will be stronger with your contribution, your integrity and your courage."
The Law Society called 253 new lawyers to the Bar of Ontario at the Ottawa ceremony. Nearly 1,700 new lawyers will be called at six Call to the Bar ceremonies being held in June.
