Law Society Tribunal Regulatory Proceedings for June 2014

TORONTO, July 3, 2014 /CNW/ - The Law Society of Upper Canada regulates the lawyers and paralegals of Ontario in the public interest. The Law Society ensures that all lawyers and licensed paralegals in Ontario meet standards of learning, professional competence and professional conduct that are appropriate for the legal services provided.

The Law Society Tribunal recently heard the following matters. The Tribunal, which is an independent administrative tribunal within the Law Society, is responsible for processing, hearing and deciding these cases.

Jasvir Kaur Billing (2008) of the City of Brampton
Decision: The Paralegal was granted permission to surrender her licence by June 30, 2014, failing which it will be revoked.

Ivan Charles Brookes (2008) of the City of Toronto
Decision: The Paralegal is suspended for three months commencing at the end of his administrative suspension and continuing indefinitely until specified conditions are met.

Douglas Allan Brown (2002) of the City of Toronto
Decision: The Lawyer is suspended for three months commencing at the end of his current suspension and continuing indefinitely until specified conditions are met.

Andrew Michael Czernik (1980) of the City of Toronto
Decision: The Lawyer was suspended for seven months, commencing at the conclusion of the suspension ordered on June 29, 2011 in relation to Notice of Application LCN41/11 and must comply with specified conditions.

David Mario Farmani (2003) of the Town of Richmond Hill
Decision: The Lawyer was suspended on an interlocutory basis commencing June 13, 2014.

Donald Andrew Scott Grant (2006) of the Community of Enfield NS
Decision: The Lawyer is suspended for one month commencing at the conclusion of his current administrative suspension and continuing indefinitely until he has complied with a specified condition.

Kenneth Wayne Johnson (1984) of the City of Ottawa
Decision: The Respondent shall pay costs of $85,527 to the Law Society.

Terence Austin Kelly (1982) of the City of Toronto
Decision: The Appellant was ordered to pay costs of $105,000 to the Society.

Thangavel Muthali Kesavan (2003) of the City of Toronto
Decision: The costs of the appeal are awarded to the Law Society in the amount of $51,862 payable within two years of June 10, 2014.

Hersch Harry Kopyto of the City of Toronto
Decision: The paralegal applicant is ordered to pay $13,000 within 30 days of the hearing panel's final determination on the merits.

Calin A. Lawrynowicz (2000) of the City of Toronto
Decision: The Lawyer was suspended for one month commencing May 9, 2014 and continuing indefinitely until specified conditions are met.

Raj Napal (1996) of the City of Brampton
Decision: The Lawyer was suspended for 60 days commencing June 1, 2014.

Michael Stephen Puskas (1996) of the City of Hamilton
Decision: Further to the order dated March 21, 2014, his 20-month suspension was to be effective June 10, 2014.

Jeffrey Ka Fai Shek (2002) of the Community of Thornhill
Decision: The Lawyer was suspended for two months starting August 1, 2014 and was made subject to other specified terms.

Robert Allen Stewart of the City of Toronto applied for a Class P1 licence, for licensing as a paralegal.
Decision: The application is allowed and a Class P1 licence shall be issued on specified terms and conditions.
