Law Society Tribunal Regulatory Proceedings for March 2015

TORONTO, April 14, 2015 /CNW/ - The Law Society of Upper Canada regulates the lawyers and paralegals of Ontario in the public interest. The Law Society ensures that all lawyers and licensed paralegals in Ontario meet standards of learning, professional competence and professional conduct that are appropriate for the legal services provided.

The Law Society Tribunal recently heard the following matters. The Tribunal, which is an independent administrative tribunal within the Law Society, is responsible for processing, hearing and deciding these cases.

ORDERS

LAWYERS

John Paul Abbott (1989) of the City of Toronto
Decision: The Hearing Division's Decision and Order is stayed until at least five days after the release of the appeal panel's decision.

Munyonzwe Hamalengwa (1991) of the City of Toronto
Decision: The Lawyer was ordered to pay costs to the Law Society in the amount of $125,000.

Michael Andrew Osborne (1981) of the City of Toronto
Decision: The Hearing Division's January 29, 2015 decision and order revoking the Lawyer's licence is stayed pending appeal.

Decision: The first condition on which the stay was granted by Order dated February 24, 2015, is varied as follows: the Appellant perfects his appeal by April 3, 2015.

Luigi Savone (1984) of the City of Ottawa
Decision: The Lawyer's licence to practise law was revoked, effective 30 days from March 11, 2015.

Norman Silver (1971) of the City of Toronto
Decision: The Lawyer shall be suspended for six months commencing April 6, 2015.

David Arthur Stevens (1980) of the City of Hamilton
Decision: The Lawyer was suspended on an interlocutory basis commencing on March 12, 2015.

Arthur Liangfei Tan (2011) of the City of Toronto
Decision: The Lawyer is suspended for six months commencing April 1, 2015, and shall comply with specified terms.

PARALEGALS

Maria John Hamdani (2012) of the City of Toronto
Decision: The Paralegal is suspended for one month commencing after her return to practice and continuing indefinitely until a specified condition is met.

Satheesan Kumarasamy (2010) of the City of Mississauga
Decision: The Paralegal was suspended for two months starting April 20, 2015, and must comply with specified conditions.

John Charles West of the City of Windsor
Decision: The Paralegal Applicant's appeal from the order of September 8, 2014, which dismissed his application for licensing as a paralegal, was dismissed.
