TORONTO, June 7, 2016 /CNW/ - Thanks to the generosity of our customers and dedicated staff, LCBO has raised more than $2.9 million for the Canadian Red Cross Alberta Fires Emergency Appeal. Red Cross efforts are assisting individuals and families affected by the wildfires in Fort McMurray and surrounding areas.
Donations were collected at LCBO's 654 stores across Ontario from May 4, 2016 to June 4, 2016. The Government of Canada is also matching all individual Canadian donations made by May 31, meaning the amount raised by LCBO will almost double.
"The $2.9 million-plus raised from in-store donations to support the relief effort in Fort McMurray is a testament to the generosity and community spirit of our customers and staff," says George Soleas, Acting LCBO President and CEO. "It shows that when we work together, we can help make a difference in the lives of those who have been affected by this natural disaster."
The wildfires prompted the largest fire-related evacuation in the history of Alberta. As residents slowly return home, the money raised will help to support recovery assistance to individuals and families directly affected.
"We want to extend our sincere thanks to LCBO customers and staff for their overwhelming generosity and support," says Conrad Sauvé, president and CEO of the Canadian Red Cross. "This extensive contribution will be felt by many individuals and families as they begin to return home and work towards rebuilding their lives, as well as their communities."
