TORONTO, May 8, 2019 /CNW/ - Hundreds of corporate leaders will join reporters and news executives from across Canada to recognize and celebrate journalistic achievement at The Canadian Journalism Foundation (CJF) Awards on June 13 at the Fairmont Royal York hotel in Toronto. Just a few tables and tickets remain for the evening event, the CJF's primary fundraiser.
This year's event will be hosted by Anne-Marie Mediwake, co-host of CTV's Your Morning, and will feature a CJF Tribute presentation to Time magazine's "Person of the Year," Maria Ressa, the embattled CEO and executive editor of the Philippine news site Rappler.com. John Honderich, chair of Torstar Corporation, will be honoured with this year's CJF Lifetime Achievement Award. Washington Post executive editor Martin Baron, a central figure in the Academy Award winning film Spotlight, will receive a Special Citation in recognition of his commitment to the pursuit of the truth.
"We look forward to honouring a stellar lineup of exceptional individuals who, with confidence and clarity, have contributed so much to journalism and to society," says Globe and Mail editor-in-chief David Walmsley, chair of the CJF. "Journalists are guardians of our democratic institutions, and we are delighted to see leading organizations coming out to support them at a time when traditional business models are challenged and there have been real attempts to silence the truth. Now, more than ever, this is a time when it is important to affirm that journalism matters and to celebrate excellence."
