TORONTO, Nov. 10, 2015 /CNW/ - Young people always figure prominently at The Royal Agricultural Winter Fair from junior exhibits to the TD Canadian 4-H Dairy Classic held on November 9. As well, this year "4-H'rs" celebrated 100 years of 4-H in Ontario at The Royal.
A 4-H team from Prince Edward Island included cousins who embody all that 4-H stands for because they help each other even though they are competitors. Connor Mann and Kyle Bouma showed calves in the Dairy Classic. Mann was named Overall Champion for Showmanship and Bouma came in fifth in his class. But, Bouma may have had a hand in Mann's win because he enjoys getting the animals ready for the ring.
"I like the competition and the contacts I'm making," Bouma said of his experience at The Royal. "I'd like to have my own dairy farm someday." He lives in Nova Scotia where his father teaches agriculture at a local college, but he travels to PEI to spend time with his cousin. That's when he acquired his love of dairy and joined a 4-H club.
Meanwhile, Mann was enjoying the show and had to be tracked down where he sat in the stands watching the other competitors. "This is the biggest 4-H show and we all look forward to it," he said. "I hope to stay in the dairy business." If that happens, he may be back at The Royal and Bouma will be helping.
The cousins embody everything that 4-H stands for – including cooperation.
The Royal is supported in part by the City of Toronto and the Province of Ontario.
The Royal Agricultural Winter Fair is the world's largest combined indoor agricultural and equestrian show.
