LeftWords Festival Celebrates Critical Perspectives, Independent Books and Magazines
TORONTO, Nov. 21, 2013 /CNW/ - The LeftWords Festival of Books and Ideas brings its celebration of critical thinkers, writers, and publishers to a free day-long festival November 24th at Ryerson University in Toronto. The event runs 11:30-5:00pm at Oakham House/Ryerson Student Union at 55 Gould Street and is wheelchair accessible. More information is available at www.leftwordsfestival.ca.
On hand with great deals will be progressive and alternative publishers, booksellers, magazines and journals, including Between the Lines books, Fernwood Publishing, Another Story Book Shop, A Different Booklist, plus magazines such as Herizons, Our Times, Alternatives, Upping the Anti and more.
In addition to the marketplace, the festival will present thought-provoking panels on topics including food security, disability, healthcare and global feminism. "LeftWords brings together intriguing authors to discuss pertinent issues that are ever-present in our world. Each speaker is an expert in their field," says Matthew Adams, one of the festival's organizers.
The program features a roster of notable author/activists, including award-winning environmentalist and food security expert Wayne Roberts and highly sought-after writer, performer and health hero Julie Devaney. Ending the festival will be the launch of the Socialist Register's 50th volume, which focuses on 'registering class.' Distinguished professor Leo Panitch and others will be on hand to speak.
LeftWords Festival of Books and Ideas was launched in 1999 and was held annually at various venues throughout Toronto until 2005. Last year the festival was re-launched to great success. LeftWords is sponsored in part by the Ryerson Students' Union.
