Let's celebrate Human Rights Day by practicing mutual respect and responsibility every day

TORONTO, Dec. 7, 2012 /CNW/ - The Canadian Race Relations Foundation (CRRF) joins all Canadians in celebrating 'Human Rights Day' (Dec 10^th).  Since the proclamation of Universal Human Rights in 1947 and the key role played by Canadian John Humphrey, Canada has made great strides to ensure its citizens are afforded a high level of Human Rights.

"While people continue to give their life to attain even the most basic rights elsewhere, we as Canadians often tend to forget how privileged we are in the rights and freedoms we enjoy here" said Rubin Friedman, Principal Operating Officer and Member of the Board Directors, of the Foundation.  "But there is still work to be done to ensure that every Canadian, regardless of race, creed, or colour can participate in the social, political and economic life of the country."

To that end, the CRRF is currently working with 25 organizations across the country on an Interfaith and Belonging Project to bring awareness of the issues faced by Canadians of different faiths, and to promote diversity and respect for one another.   "Rights and Freedoms written down in law are only the first step", reiterated Friedman, "it is in learning how to apply our mutual responsibility for daily practice of them through efforts such as these, that we truly celebrate Human Rights Day".
