Lincoln County Humane Society Executive Director Kevin Strooband Receives Award for Leadership, Cooperation and Innovation
OTTAWA, ON, April 8, 2019 /CNW/ - Humane Canada is pleased to announce that Kevin Strooband, Executive Director of the Lincoln County Humane Society will receive an award recognizing his leadership in the animal welfare movement and innovation in programming.
"Kevin is a true example of what can be achieved when we work collaboratively in the animal welfare sector," says Barbara Cartwright, CEO of Humane Canada.
Thanks to Mr. Strooband's leadership Ontario now has its first full-service, accredited veterinary clinic run by a Humane Society. The clinic is open to the public six days a week. Since the clinic started operating, on a part time basis in 2011, it has performed 30,000 spay/neuter surgeries on dogs and cats.
Mr. Strooband also took initiative to help shelters from eastern to southern Ontario in the summer of 2018 after a sudden, atypical sharp increase in the number of incoming cats. He drove from St. Catharines to Windsor to pick up 62 cats and 1 dog and bring them to Kingston, Pickering and Ottawa shelters. Overall, he logged 1,726 kilometres to help these pets.
"Our colleagues at the Windsor Humane Society were hit hard with this over-abundance of cats," Mr. Strooband explains. "I know what that's like as our shelter has been in the same situation. Helping the animals and our colleagues was the most natural thing to do."
The award will be presented this weekend at the sixth annual National Animal Welfare Conference, hosted at the Bonaventure Hotel in Montréal. This event is the largest and best attended conference of its kind in Canada, bringing together over 375 individuals who work with, care for and advocate for animals.
"The Lincoln Humane Society's investment in this veterinary clinic has started a groundswell of other interested shelters who wish to do the same," continues Cartwright. "Investing in animal welfare is investing in the overall wellbeing of communities."
This is the only award this year that received a dual nomination, from Humane Canada member, Bruce Roney, Executive Director at the Ottawa Humane Society, and Ed Klassen, President of the Board of Directors at the Lincoln County Humane Society.
Mr. Strooband is scheduled to present at the conference on his experience operating a veterinary clinic through a humane society.
