Livestock and Biotechnology: A Match Made in Heaven?

CALGARY, May 8, 2014 /CNW/ - The not-for-profit research funding organization Genome Alberta is kicking off a 6 city road show on May 14^th in Lethbridge to talk about the use of biotechnology in livestock production.

As genomics technology is applied more frequently in the livestock sector a variety of societal, cultural, and economic issues are being raised. This series of public meetings is an opportunity for the public, ranchers, and the media to ask questions, make comments, and generally have a frank and open discussion about the technology.

The 90 minute sessions run Wednesdays starting May 14^th in Lethbridge and concluding June 18^th in Fort McMurray. The Calgary session is at noon and will be moderated by science journalist Jay Ingram. All the other sessions are in the evening and are moderated by writer and broadcaster Don Hill.  Each session will feature an opening and comments from experts, followed by a moderated Q & A, and then open to the audience to ask questions and make comments.

Genome Alberta has worked with the Science Media Centre of Canada to prepare 4 background papers which will be available online and at the events. Additional funding for the entire series was provided by the Alberta Livestock and Meat Agency.

Food and refreshments will be available, admission is free, and no pre-registration is required. The full schedule of dates, times, and locations is below.
