Loblaw grocery unions from Quebec to demonstrate in Toronto Oct. 15

MONTREAL, Oct. 14, 2013 /CNW Telbec/ - Three unions of Loblaw grocery workers from northwestern Quebec will hold a series of demonstrations in Toronto on Tuesday to highlight the supermarket giant's refusal to negotiate an end to their long labour conflicts.

Workers at three Loblaw-owned supermarkets in the Abitibi-Témiscamingue region - the Maxi and Loblaws stores in Rouyn-Noranda, as well as the Provigo in Témiscaming - have been locked out or on strike for periods ranging up to 14 months.

The Loblaw chain has already been fined for negotiating in bad faith, hindering union activities and contravening one union's Charter right to freedom of association. The population of Témiscaming have been deprived of their only grocery store since Loblaw imposed a lock-out there last December.

Workers from the three supermarkets will hold a series of events in Toronto October 15, beginning at the Loblaws store at 60 Carlton St. at 9:30 am. Another demonstration will take place at the Loblaws at 3501 Yonge St. in North York, before a final gathering takes place at the Loblaw head office at 1 President's Choice Circle in Brampton at 12:15 pm.
