KINDERSLEY, SK, Oct. 11, 2013 /CNW/ - Kindersley's Local State of Emergency has ended as of 1:30 pm today after Mayor John Enns-Wind called a special meeting of Council to pass the required resolution.
The fire that began at the Kindersley landfill on Monday has been sufficiently extinguished, resulting in the closure of the Incident Command Centre at 7:30 pm last night, and the Emergency Operations Centre this morning at 9:30 am.
Smoke from the fire site is no longer a concern and the air quality in Kindersley has improved considerably.
Crews continued work into the night to spread retardant foam, cover and bury debris directly into the ground at the fire site. This work will continue for weeks, and will include direct water injection into the landfill mound. The landfill will be continually monitored by Town crews to ensure there is no potential risk of the fire reigniting.
To date, approximately 131,000 gallons of water has been used to put out the fire, and 1,300 litres of fire suppression foam. At the peak response time, 56 emergency personnel were on site at the fire, and 80 in total working as part of the emergency response. Approximately 1,600 person hours were invested on site at the fire, and around 2,500 person hours in total.
The Town of Kindersley appreciates the outstanding efforts of the Kindersley Fire Department, Public Works staff, EMO team and responders, Town staff and Council, numerous other organizations and community volunteers, and the assistance of the Provincial Fire Commission personnel, Ministry of Environment, and Ministry of Health in their response to this emergency incident.
