TORONTO, Nov. 7, 2015 /CNW/ - Not long after Julia Veenstra put her first book, Look at Those Cows!, on display in the dairy education centre at The Royal Agricultural Winter Fair (RAWF) this week, she heard people say, "Look at those cows!" But, the people weren't talking about her book; they were talking about the Ayrshire, Guernsey, Brown Swiss, and Holstein cows on display behind her. That's when she realized her ABC book that is all about cows is aptly named.
"I attended Sheridan College's art program and we had to go to The Royal and draw and I was attracted to the cows," Veenstra says. "I usually paint landscapes, but, when I am stuck, I paint cows to reduce the stress."
In 2013, the Hamilton resident entered the RAWF poster design contest and won. Of course, her painting depicted a cow.
In 2015, she teamed up with her daughter Rachel Cuthill, an art and English teacher in Hamilton, to produce Look at Those Cows! in partnership with the Dairy Farmers of Ontario. The book celebrates the 50th anniversary of the organization and the 20th anniversary of the Dairy Education Program. The Dairy Farmers of Ontario are placing a copy of the book in every elementary school in Ontario.
"With that kind of support, the book is almost a best seller!" Veenstra enthuses.
The Royal is supported in part by the City of Toronto and the Province of Ontario.
The Royal Agricultural Winter Fair is the world's largest combined indoor agricultural and equestrian show.
