Montérégie resident takes home
a jackpot of $37,594,693
MONTREAL, Aug. 26 /CNW Telbec/ - Montérégie resident Bernard Grenier won the August 20th Lotto Max jackpot of $37,594,693. This hefty amount is the largest jackpot ever to be won in Québec.
Grenier realized he had become a multimillionaire when his spouse read him the winning numbers from the morning paper. While he remained calm, his spouse, quite to the contrary, was rather flustered by the news. The couple proceeded to verify the numbers on the internet and visited a retailer to obtain the coupon confirming their lucky win.
Grenier would often boast to his co-workers as he left work on Fridays: "Don't expect me on Monday because I plan on winning the jackpot!" Last Monday, when he announced that he had indeed won, no one believed the reputed jokester. The lucky winner has already bought a new car and plans to purchase a home that he has had his eye on for over a year.
The lucky ticket was purchased at an IGA Extra store located in the Montérégie region. The retailer will receive a 1% commission of $375,946.
Just days before its 1st anniversary, Lotto Max paid out, over a two-week period, more than 64 million dollars in Québec alone. In addition to last Friday's draw of some 37 million dollars, half of the August 13th jackpot, the equivalent of 25 million dollars, was won by a group from the Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean region. During the same two-week period, two Maxmillion prizes were also won in Québec.
