SUBWAY® Canada survey reveals lunch is on the bottom of Canadians' to do lists; brings back avocado and spinach season to help consumers power through their day
TORONTO, May 14, 2014 /CNW/ - An increased workload, busy schedules and an ever-connected workforce have taken the focus away from the importance of lunch. According to a recent SUBWAY® Restaurants' Love Your Lunch poll, half (47%) of Canadians admit to skipping lunch at least once in the last two weeks, with more than one in ten indicating they've skipped more than a weeks' worth of lunches (between 8 - 14 meals) in this time frame.
"With many people constantly connected to their work it is no wonder that skipped lunch breaks are a growing trend," says Hélène Charlebois, Registered Dietitian. "The body is programmed to need food every 4 to 5 hours. By missing your lunch meal, chances are you will experience low energy later in the day and reach for that not so healthy option in your office snack drawer or nearby canteen."
SUBWAY® Restaurants understands that a well-balanced lunch is often the last thing on the minds of Canadians when the twelve o'clock hour hits. To help Canadians make lunch a special part of the day, SUBWAY® Restaurants is bringing back two seasonal ingredient favourites. For a limited time, spinach and avocado is now available at more than 3,000 SUBWAY® locations across Canada, along with a new Turkey and Ham with Avocado and Spinach sandwich.
"It is important to give your lunch the attention it deserves and put thought into eating healthier food options. By adding these two nutrient-rich ingredients, currently offered at SUBWAY® Restaurants, you will help increase your intake of fibre, iron, potassium and good fats needed to power through the afternoon and finish the day with vitality and energy," said Charlebois.
While packing a well-balanced lunch would be ideal, it just isn't in the cards for many busy Canadians. For those who aren't skipping lunch, 41% admit to grabbing take-out, like a burger or pizza, from the closest fast food vendor or restaurant, two-thirds admit to snacking on whatever they have available at their desk or home and a quarter (24%) said they don't think about what they are eating, making lunch purchases based on convenience.
SUBWAY® Restaurants is a fast and convenient solution for those looking for freshly-prepared meals on the go. With an assortment of sandwiches and salads and a variety of low-fat options including their '8 under 6 grams of fat or less' sandwiches, there's sure to be a meal option that curbs one's hunger while staying true to any dietary requirements.

Survey Methodology
SUBWAY® Restaurants commissioned Ipsos Reid to conduct an online poll between May 8th and 11th, 2014. For this survey, a sample of 1,006 Canadians from Ipsos' Canadian online panel was interviewed online. Weighting was then employed to balance demographics to ensure that the sample's composition reflects that of the adult population according to Census data and to provide results intended to approximate the sample universe. The precision of Ipsos online polls is measured using a credibility interval. In this case, the poll is accurate to within +/- 3.5 percentage points had all Canadians adults been polled. All sample surveys and polls may be subject to other sources of error, including, but not limited to coverage error, and measurement error.
