MONTREAL, May 25, 2018 /CNW Telbec/ - Michel Bissonnette, Executive Vice-President of Radio-Canada, today announced the appointment of Luce Julien as Executive Director of News and Current Affairs. She takes over from Michel Cormier, who is retiring in July.
Ms. Julien has been editor-in-chief of Le Devoir since February 2016, but spent the previous 23 years working for Radio-Canada, where she headed up radio news, ICI RDI, as well as digital and multiplatform coverage.
"Known for her thoroughness and strong journalistic ethic, Luce has a keen eye for news and current affairs," said Michel Bissonnette. "She firmly believes in the importance and relevance of a public broadcaster, while also being a staunch advocate for the essential role that journalism plays in our society. Her background in radio, television and print journalism, coupled with her extensive knowledge of the public broadcaster and commitment to digital, makes her the ideal candidate to help Radio-Canada propel itself into the future and remain a news leader in the country."
At both Radio-Canada and Le Devoir, Ms. Julien has had first-hand experience with the digital transformation sweeping the news industry. With the Le Devoir team, she launched the newspaper's new website and mobile app, while at Radio-Canada, she was instrumental in instilling a digital culture in the news department. She was also behind the launch of D magazine at Le Devoir and the newsmagazine 24/60 on ICI RDI.
"I'm delighted at the confidence placed in me and proud to be the first woman named executive director of Radio-Canada News and Current Affairs," said Ms. Julien. "I'm committed to maintaining the highest standards of public service journalism. Now more than ever, we need serious news media and conscientious journalists who care deeply about getting the facts straight. Radio-Canada has a role to play in providing Canadians with news coverage free of outside influence – high-quality, trustworthy journalism that allows them to better understand the society they live in."
Ms. Julien will work alongside Michel Cormier during a transition period before officially taking the helm on July 31.
