MONTREAL, Dec. 17, 2013 /CNW Telbec/ - This holiday season is the perfect time to discover Beat Nation: Art, Hip Hop and Aboriginal Culture, a remarkable exhibition that has garnered repeated praise from both the general public and the media since its October opening at the Musée d'art contemporain de Montréal. Don't miss it - only a few weeks are left to enjoy this exhibition, which begins with hip hop and expands to include pop culture, graffiti, fashion and other aspects of urban life. Beat Nation describes a generation of artists who juxtapose urban culture with Aboriginal identity to create innovative and unexpected new works that reflect the realities of Aboriginal peoples today.
Among the most rhapsodic reviews of Beat Nation are the comments of radio host Marie-France Bazzo, who urged C'est pas trop tôt ! listeners on October 23 to "Get going! This exhibition brings together a group of young native artists who create music, visual arts and dance… It's like a huge call of distress… that also exudes resiliency and vitality. This is real contemporary art, in its most stimulating form. Bring your children - they'll love it!" The exhibition was also hailed by NYTimes.com, which gave it a mention on October 15 in its regular feature In Transit: A Guide to Intelligent Travel.
Organized and circulated by the Vancouver Art Gallery, and based on an initiative by grunt gallery, Vancouver, Beat Nation is a multi-disciplinary exhibition presenting works in various media: painting, sculpture, installation art, performance and video.
The 24 artists featured offer unique cultural hybrids that include graffiti murals with Haida figures, sculptures carved out of skateboard decks and live video remixes with Hollywood films, to name a few.
