Manitoba Telecom holds annual meeting of shareholders

WINNIPEG, May 6 /CNW/ - Manitoba Telecom Services Inc. (the "Company" or "MTS Allstream") , held its annual general and special meeting of shareholders today, where the election of directors occurred and the Board of Directors announced the retirement of director and former Chairman Thomas E. Stefanson. Pierre Blouin, Chief Executive Officer, addressed the Company's performance and priorities.
"Where it counts, for the products that will be the foundation of our business in the future - broadband, wireless, television and converged IP - MTS Allstream delivered solid growth," said CEO Pierre Blouin, who also discussed certain regulatory developments that may provide future opportunities for the Company. "We welcome the Federal government's announcement that it intends to lift the restrictions on foreign investment applicable to telecommunications companies. We see the elimination of the foreign investment restrictions as a key ingredient to building a truly innovative, competitive and productive digital economy."
In his address Mr. Blouin also talked about the Company's focus on targeted wireline and wireless network expansion, about MTS's leading position in the Manitoba market, about Allstream's opportunity to gain market share nationally, and continuing to deliver the best customer experience nationally.
Thomas E. Stefanson retired from the Board of Directors after 21 years of service, including 20 as Chairman, and his contribution was acknowledged by Mr. Blouin and David Leith, who succeeded Mr. Stefanson as Chair of the Board in January of this year. In addition to the Chair, Mr. Leith, the returning members of the Board were Pierre Blouin, Jocelyne M. Côté-O'Hara, N. Ashleigh Everett, The Honourable Gary A. Filmon, Gregory J. Hanson, Kishore Kapoor, Donald H. Penny, D. Samuel Schellenberg and Carol M. Stephenson.
In addition, Deloitte & Touche LLP was reappointed as the auditors of the Company. As well, certain housekeeping amendments to the Company's by-laws were confirmed.
