The report reviews the Company's commitment to social responsibility, environmental sustainability, excellence in business conduct and corporate governance.
The 2011 Public Accountability Statement highlights efforts in Canada, the United States and Asia to build stronger communities, promote health and wellness, support educational initiatives for young people and tomorrow's leaders, enhance environmental sustainability and harness the power of volunteering in the community.
Manulife Financial's approach to corporate social responsibility reflects its commitment to clients, shareholders, employees, communities and the environment.
In 2011:
- Manulife and its employees gave $24.8 million to more than 600 non-profit organization where we do business around the globe and more than 15,000 employees and distribution partners contributed 58,740 volunteer hours in communities where we operate.
- In Canada, the results of a research report on volunteerism, commissioned by Manulife Financial and Volunteer Canada, called Bridging the Gap identified challenges encountered by potential volunteers. Manulife Financial and Volunteer Canada are working together to address these challenges to help build resilient communities.
- Employee runners and company-sponsored non-profit runners from John Hancock - Manulife Financial's brand in the United States, headquartered in Boston - raised $5.3 million for community programs through their participation in the Boston Marathon.
- More than 3,000 Manulife Financial employees and agents participated in the 10-kilometre Walk for Millions which raises funds for family and child welfare services in Hong Kong. Over the past 17 years, more than 15,000 Manulife employees have raised more than HK$10 million for the charity.
In 2012:
Manulife Financial will launch a partnership with the Ladies Professional Golf Association to support St. Mary's Hospital Foundation in Waterloo Region. This world-class sporting event will create many volunteer opportunities in the community and proceeds will help support the hospital's vital volunteer program, its Regional Cardiac Care Centre, and raising awareness about the importance of women's heart health.
