March of Dimes Canada Celebrates World Stroke Day by Announcing After Stroke Program
TORONTO, Oct. 29, 2018 /CNW/ - Every stroke is different, and so is every survivor. The one thing they have in common is the need and ability to thrive in their lives after stroke.
It isn't always easy. The health care system can be confusing and overwhelming for stroke survivors and caregivers to navigate, which is why March of Dimes Canada is so pleased to announce its new model of care, After Stroke.
'We're very excited about our After Stroke program,' says Donna Mackay, Associate Director of Community and Integration Services for March of Dimes Canada. 'We want to be there for stroke survivors during their recovery journey, and for caregivers too.'
Like this year's World Stroke Day theme, After Stroke (previously Stroke Recovery Canada) aims to get people #upagainafterstroke by providing the tools they need to successfully manage their care and re-engage with their communities.
These tools include hospital visitation programs, peer support groups, exercise programs, and aphasia and communications support, all designed to facilitate a successful transition from hospital to home and, later, from home back into the community.
'That's where the gap in service is,' Mackay continues, 'so that's where we need to be.'
After Stroke also includes a website where stroke survivors and caregivers can register for regular updates based on their needs and interests.
'Stroke survivors may have decades of life ahead of them,' adds Mackay. 'And there's no reason they can't be enjoyable, fulfilling decades. We're trying to ensure that the right tools and resources are available.'
