Marijuana for Trauma Inc. files lawsuit against OrganiGram Holdings Inc.
Company alleges OrganiGram unlawfully terminated partnership and inappropriately used proprietary information
FREDERICTON, July 21, 2015 /CNW/ - Marijuana for Trauma Inc. and its principals/shareholders (collectively, MFT) have commenced a lawsuit against OrganiGram Holdings Inc., whose wholly-owned subsidiary, OrganiGram Inc. (OrganiGram) is a licensed producer of medical marijuana in Canada. The lawsuit was filed with the Court of Queen's Bench of New Brunswick, Judicial District of Fredericton for: breach of confidence, conversion, breach of contract, conspiracy and breach of trust, breach of fiduciary duty, and negligent misrepresentation.
The lawsuit alleges OrganiGram denied MFT its interest in Trauma Healing Centers Inc. (THC). THC, developed through a partnership between MFT, OrganiGram and Denis Arsenault, CEO of OrganiGram and also a Defendant in the lawsuit, opened centres in several cities in eastern Canada to provide services to those suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and other chronic conditions caused by trauma. MFT alleges that OrganiGram unlawfully terminated the relationship, unlawfully used MFT's proprietary information, business practices, and expansion plans for MFT. Following the termination of the relationship in February 2015, THC moved to restrict MFT from helping veterans and first responders outside of New Brunswick.
"We had an agreement with OrganiGram and Denis Arsenault to expand our services assisting veterans suffering from PTSD," said Fabian Henry, founder and president of Marijuana for Trauma Inc. "The agreement was supposed to create a seamless experience for approved clients in need of a referral to a licensed medical marijuana producer. The termination of our business arrangement and subsequent use of our business and expansion plans is unlawful and will affect our ability to help hundreds of veterans."
Founded in 2013, MFT is a medical marijuana consulting service for individuals suffering from PTSD, chronic pain and other similar illnesses. MFT is geared towards veterans, but also helps first responders and civilians assisting in the full process of obtaining a referral to access medical marijuana to treat chronic conditions resulting from trauma. As veterans of the Canadian Armed Forces, founder and president Fabian Henry and vice-president Michael Southwell use their personal experiences to assist Canadian veterans suffering from PTSD with managing the illness.
"We understand the challenges veterans face when they return from combat and the difficulty of dealing with trauma. Medical marijuana is effective in treating these chronic conditions," said Michael Southwell, vice-president of Marijuana for Trauma Inc. "Our goal remains to expand our services and bring the best care options to veterans across Canada."
