Mayor Bevilacqua recognizes Rail Safety Week
The City of Vaughan believes all rail-related accidents are preventable
VAUGHAN, ON, Sept. 26, 2018 /CNW/ - The following is a statement delivered by Vaughan Mayor Maurizio Bevilacqua in recognition of Rail Safety Week:
"The City of Vaughan is home to a vast network of rail operations, including CN, CP and Metrolinx. These partnerships are vital to our ongoing city-building efforts and to providing ever-growing access to more places and more markets for our residents and our businesses."
"For the City of Vaughan, there is no greater responsibility than the safety and well-being of our residents and the City takes that responsibility very seriously."
"With Rail Safety Week being observed across North America, it serves as a reminder to remain diligent when it comes to rail crossing safety and avoiding the risks associated with trespassing near rail corridors. As Vaughan continues to grow, safety and security remain high priorities for Council. We encourage everyone to be aware and obey the signs at rail crossings."
"The City is home to CN's MacMillan Yard – its largest rail classification facility. CP's Vaughan Intermodal Terminal – the largest of CP's 10 intermodal facilities - is also located here. These facilities help unlock important economic development opportunities for the City of Vaughan, including Home Depot's Stock and Flow Campus, which led to the creation of 400 new local jobs."
"The basis for this partnership, between the City of Vaughan and rail operators, has, and must remain, rooted in a shared commitment to the safety and well-being of our residents. We must continue to strive for more positive outcomes as our partnerships with CN and CP remain open, transparent and stronger than ever."
Rail Safety Week continues to September 29. Here are some tips to keep in mind:
- Always cross railway tracks at designated pedestrian or railway crossings
- Don't use railway property, bridges or tunnels as shortcuts
- Don't climb or walk around stopped trains – they can start moving at any time
- Remember to always think safety first when it comes to trains
