MONTREAL, Dec. 6, 2013 /CNW Telbec/ - On behalf of the McGill University community, H. Arnold Steinberg, Chancellor, and Prof. Suzanne Fortier, Principal and Vice-Chancellor, extend condolences to the family of Nelson Mandela and to the people of South Africa, including McGill's South African staff and students.
"Nelson Mandela was one of the world's most formidable and inspirational leaders," said Chancellor Steinberg. "The world has lost a great and moral individual whose sense of justice and fairness, whose courageous quest for peace and equality, serve to enlighten people in every part of the world."
"Mr. Mandela understood fully how the sharing of knowledge is a force for progress," added Prof. Fortier. "'Education,' he said in 2003, 'is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.' McGill University salutes his memory. May his beacon continue to light the long way toward tolerance and mutual understanding."
McGill's flag will be lowered on Tuesday, December 10, to mark his passing.
