TORONTO, April 23, 2018 /CNW/ - Consulting Engineers of Ontario (CEO) awarded McIntosh Perry, a multi-disciplinary consulting engineering firm, The Willis Chipman Award for 2018 for the Deloro Mine Clean-Up project. The Willis Chipman award is given to projects that best demonstrate the important contribution of consulting engineering and improving the economic, social and environmental quality of life in Ontario. The Ontario Consulting Engineering Awards Gala, in its 16th year, is Ontario's most prestigious industry award program for consulting engineering.
"Completion of the cleanup of the Industrial and Mine Area, Phase 3 at Deloro has transformed an abandoned, unsightly industrial are along the Moira River into what looks like a rolling drumlin with restored riverbanks," said Mark Priddle, Vice-President, Sustainable Communities, McIntosh Perry. "In doing so, human health and environmental have been improved in the local area and downstream for many future generations."
A 202-hectare abandoned mine and industrial area located approximately 60 km east of Peterborough, Ontario, The Deloro Mine site was originally developed to extract and process arsenopyrite ore for the extraction of gold. The Ontario Ministry of Environment and Climate Change (MOECC) assumed control when the site was abandoned in 1979. The objective of the project is to finish the cleanup of the abandoned mining and industrial complex by isolated and containing wastes, and engineering the site to be safe for people and the environment for now and the future. McIntosh Perry was the prime consultant on the project and provided project management, contract administration and inspection services.
