MEC opens Calgary South store in time for Labour Day long weekend
Part of MEC's increased investment in the Calgary market, the new Seton store opens after close to $1M in funding for community projects in the region
CALGARY, Aug. 28, 2018 /CNW/ - MEC (Mountain Equipment Co-op), Canada's go-to place for outdoor gear, know-how and inspiration, will open its second store in Calgary on Saturday, September 1, 2018, ahead of the grand opening event on September 8th. Located in the growing Seton Urban District, the 24,000-square-foot store will feature a wide product assortment and be a community hub with classes, clinics, meetups and workshops to support MEC members in leading their best lives outdoors. An open-concept bike shop, unique to this location, will provide full-service maintenance, repairs and fittings.
The new location will carry over 700 brands, including the in-house MEC Label collection, and cover an extensive array of product, from technical gear for the backcountry to comfy kids' clothes for the new school year. There will also be gear and apparel for camping, climbing, paddling, snowsports, cycling, hiking, running, fitness and travel. Co-op members will be able to participate in store experiences such as MEC's Race Series and how-to sessions on topics such as backpacking, backcountry navigation and bike maintenance.
"We're excited to expand our product offerings, experiences and community engagement to over 450,000 existing and new MEC members across Calgary," said Sandy Treagus, Chief Financial Officer, Mountain Equipment Co-op. "We're committed to investing in Calgary South and empowering its growing population to lead active lives by funding local initiatives and creating an inclusive community hub for outdoor adventure. With Seton's vast green spaces, parks and accessible urban developments, it was a natural choice for our fourth Alberta location."
The new Calgary South store will complement MEC's existing downtown location and will be joined by a Calgary West store in the Trinity Hills development in late 2019. In the past 10 years, MEC has supported over 300 projects in the Calgary area to make getting active outside just a little bit easier. Since 2008, MEC has contributed over $900,000 to organizations such as CPAWS Southern Alberta, the Spin Sisters Mountain Bike Club and the Friends of Fish Creek.
MEC's latest store location will be part of a 15-year, 365-acre multifaceted urban development in Seton stewarded by Brookfield Residential. Once complete, Seton and its surrounding neighborhoods are expected to house 120,000 people in a well-connected urban hub positioned among the Calgary Greenway, the Bow River and green spaces.
