Commissioner Cavoukian to speak on the global movement towards Open Data at "Right to Know Week" event at the Toronto Board of Trade
TORONTO, Sept. 17, 2012 /CNW/ - In celebration of Right to Know Week 2012, Ontario's Information and Privacy Commissioner, Dr. Ann Cavoukian, will host an event on how Open Data makes vast amounts of government-held data available to the public, academics, researchers, and industry, for use in new and unanticipated ways. As long as personal information is protected from such disclosure, the open data movement bodes very well for introducing greater transparency to government activities.
The global movement towards Open Data is one of the truest embodiments of Access by Design, the framework developed by Commissioner Cavoukian that encourages public institutions to proactively release information as part of an automatic process, making access the default, wherever possible. Open Data makes machine-readable data freely accessible by way of portals, metadata, and search tools.
