Award-winning community outreach program returns to Alberta this summer - Official launch Wednesday, May 26, 2010 - </pre> <p/> <p><span class="xn-location">EDMONTON</span>, <span class="xn-chron">May 21</span> /CNW/ -</p> <p/> <pre> WHAT: News conference to announce details of the 2010 Be Smart. Be Safe. Tour, an award-winning community outreach program that is returning to Alberta after successful 2008 and 2009 summer seasons. The entertaining and educational program was developed by Insurance Bureau of Canada (IBC) to prevent injuries and save lives. WHY: Most injuries, whether they occur on the road, at home or at play, are preventable. The numbers are high. For example, Alberta roads are the scene of approximately 400 fatalities and 27,000 injuries every year. Driver errors are responsible for over 90% of collisions. WHEN/WHERE: Wednesday, May 26, at noon at Sir Winston Churchill Square, 1 Sir Winston Churchill Square, Edmonton WHO: Peter Sandhu, MLA for Edmonton-Manning Evan Berger, MLA for Livingstone-Macleod Dave Thiele, Edmonton City Councillor Don Iveson, Edmonton City Councillor Blaine Stevenson and Brian Levesque, Fire Prevention Officers, Edmonton Fire Rescue Services Sparky! The Edmonton Fire Department Mascot Jeff Haley, Director, Government Relations, IBC The 2010 Be Smart. Be Safe. student ambassadors, a team of Alberta university students HIGHLIGHTS: - The DUMB Car 2.0 simulator addresses a broad range of road safety issues including driving while distracted and in adverse weather, avoiding road hazards and identifying the point-of-no-return at traffic lights. IBC has also included an eco-driving segment to teach people how to improve fuel efficiency and reduce their carbon footprints. - A three-dimensional, interactive simulator teaches families about fire safety and injury prevention in every room in the house. - An educational display shows the public what should be included in an emergency preparedness kit in the event of a natural disaster. - An interactive exhibit teaches kids how to avoid common household injuries. - Entertainment by Alberta's own unique folk group, The Plain Janes. - A light lunch will be available following the news conference.
