NORTH VANCOUVER, BC, July 11, 2017 /CNW/ - The BC Professional Fire Fighters' Burn Fund kicks off Burn Camp this Sunday, July 16th, 2017 with 68 burn injured children, over 60 volunteer counselors and support staff who will all be heading up to beautiful Cheakamus Centre in Brackendale for a week of fun. Campers and their counselors participate in group activities such as swimming, hiking, kayaking, a skit night, and arts & crafts. They also receive valuable one-on-one support from counselors and other burn survivors.
Also in attendance at the Kick-Off event will be the young burn survivors. These children (under 6 years old) along with their families, are invited to participate in the many festivities where they can meet other Burn Survivors and see first-hand what camp is about and look forward to when they can go to camp.
A pancake breakfast and Kick-Off to Camp celebration is set for Sunday, July 16th from 9:00 AM to Noon at Ambleside Park, located at 1150 Marine Drive, West Vancouver, BC. This 24th year of camp is proudly hosted by the North Vancouver City Fire Fighters IAFF Local 296, North Vancouver District Fire Fighters IAFF Local 1183 and West Vancouver Fire Fighters IAFF Local 1525. The Burn Camp was started, by the now retired, Peter Hansen and Norm McLeod, North Vancouver District Fire Fighters. These fire fighters, who were also Directors on the Burn Fund Board, saw the importance of having such a camp and worked with the Burn Fund to establish it.
Media are invited to meet the campers, chat with their families and the camp's counselors who donate their time — professional fire fighters, burn unit doctors & nurses and adult burn survivors — all who make up 'Burn Camp 2017'.
In conjunction with Burn Camp, the BC Professional Fire Fighters' Burn Fund urges everyone, especially children, to take care and have a safe, injury-free summer. Campers' injuries range from playing with gasoline and matches, to scalds from hot water and liquids, to accidental injuries like house fires and boating and car accidents.
Many burn injuries are preventable. To assist the public, the Burn Fund has issued a list of Summer Safety Tips and www.burnfund.org
