Media Advisory - Bridgewater Area Care Workers Join CAW

HALIFAX, Oct. 12, 2012 /CNW/ - Long term care workers at LaHave Manor near Bridgewater, Nova Scotia have joined the CAW - one of Canada's largest and most influential labour unions with nearly 200,000 members across the country. The union vote was finalized on October 10.

CAW National Representative Rick Rose commended the 70 new members at LaHave Manor for their resolve in seeing the democratic union certification process through to completion.

"For the first time, these workers will be able to sit across the table with their employer and negotiate a collective agreement," said Rose. "They'll have an equal say in setting work standards, health and safety provisions as well as wages and benefits and other terms of work. That's an empowering position to be in."

New members will also be eligible to access a wealth of CAW-provided training and educational opportunities, Rose said.

The Adult Residential Centre, a long-standing fixture in the Bridgewater area, is owned by LaHave Manor Corporation. LaHave operates three other homes in Bridgewater, including Compassion House, Fernwood House and Pleasant Street Group Homes.

The CAW represents over 10,000 workers across Nova Scotia, including in health care, shipbuilding, aerospace, retail stores, and others.
