Media Advisory - Brighter Nights™: Shining a Light on Safety in Toronto Communities
TORONTO, Aug. 14, 2013 /CNW/ - Residents in communities across the city are working with Toronto Hydro-Electric System Limited ("Toronto Hydro"), City of Toronto Community Crisis Response Program (CCRP) and local volunteers to brighten the night by installing energy efficient light bulbs. This year, approximately 650 bulbs have been installed in communities across the city. Today's event will be held in the Keele and Finch area south of York University. Toronto Hydro has already done extensive tree trimming at this site to improve lighting and visibility.
WHO: | Councillor Anthony Perruzza, Toronto Hydro, City of Toronto (Community Crisis Response), Toronto Police, and local volunteers. |
WHAT: | Toronto Hydro representatives and local volunteers will be canvassing the Four Winds Drive neighbourhood. Volunteers expect to install over 100 light bulbs. |
WHEN: |
Wednesday, August 14, 2013 5 p.m. - 7 p.m. |
WHERE: | 25 Four Winds Drive (parking at 31 Four Winds Drive) |
WHY: | The Brighter Nights program responds to safety concerns in vulnerable neighbourhoods and helps make them brighter and safer, by installing compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFLs) and encouraging residents to leave them on overnight. CFL bulbs left on between 9 p.m. and 7 a.m. cost about a penny a day because they use 75 per cent less electricity* than standard incandescent bulbs. |
The Brighter Nights program is a community based response to safety concerns. This community outreach program aligns safety with energy efficiency by focusing on how valuable lighting can be to our communities. More info on this program can be found at torontohydro.com/brighternights |
