Media Advisory - Canadian Dermatology Association (CDA) hosts skin cancer screening at Manitoba Legislature on April 15
WINNIPEG, April 12, 2013 /CNW/ - On Monday, April 15, 2013 Winnipeg dermatologists will be screening MLA's and legislature staff for skin cancer and showing them how to conduct their own at-home self-exams.

Why: | To create awareness about importance of early detection conducting regular at-home self-exams |
Background:
- The incidence rate of melanoma in women is 9 per 100,000 in Manitoba.
- The survival rate for melanoma is high; 90% of Canadians diagnosed with melanoma will survive. Early detection of melanoma is very important as this is directly linked to the high survival rate. Unlike many cancers, melanoma is clearly visible on the skin. (Canadian Cancer Statistics 2009)
- Research shows that 53% of melanoma skin cancers are discovered by the patients themselves and a further 17% by their family members.
