Media Advisory - Canadian Dermatology Association to host free skin cancer screening at the Avalon Mall on Wednesday, June 4th
ST. JOHN'S, May 30, 2014 /CNW/ - On Wednesday, June 4th the Canadian Dermatology Association will host a free skin cancer screening clinic to educate the public on the importance of early detection and prevention for all skin cancers. Participants will also learn how to conduct at-home skin cancer self-examinations.

Background:
- This year it is estimated that 6,500 Canadians will be diagnosed with melanoma and 1,050 will die from it.
- What does this mean for Newfoundland? An estimated 85 new cases of melanoma being diagnosed in 2014 and 20 preventable deaths.
- Newfoundland and Nova Scotia have the highest death rates for melanoma in Canada at 4 deaths per 100,000, compared to 2 deaths per 100,000 Saskatchewan, Quebec and New Brunswick.
