Recycling event commemorating Earth Day aimed at reducing landfill waste

HAMILTON, ON, April 15, 2016 /CNW/ - To celebrate Earth Day, CF Lime Ridge is doing its part to help divert landfill waste by offering local residents a convenient way to dispose of electronic waste items at no charge. On Friday, April 22^nd (Earth Day), and Saturday, April 23^rd e-waste items, including printers, toners, computers, cameras, cell phones, televisions/monitors, wires, etc., will be collected during regular shopping centre hours for safe disposal.

"Improper waste disposal can have hazardous lasting effects on the environment and we're pleased to offer community members the opportunity to easily purge personal e-waste at no cost," said Liem Vu, General Manager, CF Lime Ridge. "Sustainability is a core value for CF Lime Ridge, one which we know is also very important to our customers and retailers as well. We are always looking for new ways to drive environmentally conscious change at the shopping centre and this event is one way we can continue our efforts to promote and practice long-term environmental sustainability."

CF Lime Ridge is joining forces with e-waste environmental partner Revolution Recycling to safely recycle returned electronics. Unwanted e-waste, which may contain hazardous substances such as lead and mercury which can leach into ground water if not disposed properly, will be collected in the Hudson's Bay court on the lower level at the shopping centre. Additionally, representatives from environmental partner Cascades Recovery Inc. will be on-site on April 22^nd from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. to educate consumers on the importance of recycling. One hundred per cent of the e-waste collected during this event will be diverted from landfill sites.

Ongoing sustainability at CF Lime Ridge

As part of Cadillac Fairview's larger corporate-wide GREEN AT WORK™ sustainability program, CF Lime Ridge is dedicated to integrating sustainability into building operation and maintenance, including reducing energy and waste management and building community awareness about environmental impact. To save energy, in 2014 the Green Team at CF Lime Ridge identified an opportunity to use a new and more efficient central operating plant resulting in a daily savings of one hour's usage of the HVAC system. Since its instillation, the initiative has proven highly successful for the centre, generating an annual energy savings of roughly 300,000 kWh. Additionally, in 2015 alone, CF Lime Ridge's diversion efforts have led to 800 metric tonnes of materials recovered, saving 96,671,000 litres of water, over 4,939,900 kWh of energy, more than 6,100 mature trees, and reducing landfill reduction by 2,540.6 cubic yards*.
