Media Advisory - Christie Refugee Welcome Centre Celebrates 25 years of Welcoming refugees
Reception Centre opened its doors in 1989 to care for the world's refugees arriving in Toronto
TORONTO, Sept. 18, 2014 /CNW/ - Christie Refugee Welcome Centre will mark its 25th Anniversary with a huge backyard barbeque at the Christie Street site. The celebration will be a gathering of our current refugee families, former families, staff, board members, donors, volunteers and community partners. Food, international music, a silent auction, celebratory speeches and cake cutting will mark the event.
Partnering with the City of Toronto, Christie Refugee Welcome Centre is one of the largest family shelters in Toronto with a focus on serving refugee families. Providing emergency shelter, practical support such as food and clothing, settlement services and orientations to Canadian life are the cornerstones of the Centre's work. In the past quarter century, more than 10,000 refugees have come through the doors and been given a warm and safe welcome. Many refugees acknowledge Christie as their first home in Canada and contribute their success as newcomers to the good beginning they received at Christie.
