Media Advisory - Early-bird tickets available for CJF J-Talk 'Face-off: Are We Getting What We Deserve From Sports Reporters?'
TORONTO, May 8, 2013 /CNW/ - Early-bird tickets are available for the CJF J-Talk Face-off: Are We Getting What We Deserve From Sports Reporters?, presented by The Canadian Journalism Foundation. The event takes place at the TMX Broadcast Centre at The Exchange Tower in Toronto on May 23 and is part of the CJF J-Talks series, exploring issues and challenges shaping journalism.
Where does truth lie when pro players and reporters work for the one big company? When players and teams can communicate directly with fans on Twitter, what's left for sports journalists? When sports reporting requires a detailed knowledge of economics, is the story still about the game?
Join Steve Maich, publisher and editor-in-chief of Sportsnet magazine, Andi Petrillo, reporter for CBC's Hockey Night in Canada, Bruce Kidd, champion runner and University of Toronto sports expert, and moderator Bruce Dowbiggin, sports journalist and broadcaster, for a discussion on the challenges facing sports journalism. "I believe sports are now the single most powerful segment of our popular culture," says Maich. "They tap into our deeply-held emotions and our tribal sense of community unlike anything else in the arts or sciences. Far from being a trivial diversion, sports matter, and they matter more than ever. And so, it's a good time to ask whether sports fans are getting what they need from the reporters and editors charged with examining and interpreting this multi-billion dollar industry that so many of us care passionately about."
Thank you to CJF J-Talk exclusive series sponsor BMO Financial Group and in-kind supporters CNW and CPAC.
