OTTAWA, May 28, 2015 /CNW/ - Assembly of First Nations Chief Perry Bellegarde joins educators at a gathering held in advance of the release of the Truth & Reconciliation Commission Report. At 2:00 pm on May 30th 2015, Chief Bellegarde and Indigenous education experts will convene in Lamoureux Hall Room 122 on the University of Ottawa campus at a panel discussion on progress and challenges in Indigenous education. TRC Commissioner Marie Wilson will be on hand to convey the recommendations for education from the TRC's final report.
Panel members include leading Aboriginal education scholars from across Canada, including Marie Battiste, Jean-Paul Restoule, Laara Fitznor, and Jan Hare. The panel revisits the Accord on Indigenous Education, written in 2010 by the Association of Canadian Deans of Education (http://www.csse-scee.ca/docs/acde/acde_accord_indigenousresearch_en.pdf). The Accord offers guiding principles for advancing Indigenous education in Canada.
The panel is sponsored by the Canadian Society for the Study of Education (CSSE). CSSE President Don Klinger notes "Current and future teachers have an important responsibility in building the kinds of awareness, knowledge, and sense of responsiveness that Canadian society needs." Klinger believes that facing colonialism and colonization with clear eyes will help all Canadians to build relationships of respect and accountability.
Canada's largest annual gathering of education experts is happening in Ottawa from May 30th to June 3rd.
