MEDIA ADVISORY - Equalization: Time for a Better Approach
CALGARY, Jan. 27, 2014 /CNW/ - Current arrangements for federal transfers to the provinces will expire on March 31, 2014. Yes, it's time to revisit the formula for equalization. This central component of fiscal federalism has spurred plenty of debate over the years. For example, some question whether the program penalizes productive provinces and rewards those that are unproductive.
Canada' equalization program will be the focus of an upcoming conference hosted by The School of Public Policy. The event is open to media and will feature prominent fiscal policy experts as they debate some of the options for revamping equalization so new arrangements are in place on April 1st.
