Media Advisory - Experts Available to Comment on Translational Research in
Canada
VANCOUVER, Sept. 10 /CNW/ - Tonight many television networks are airing Stand Up 2 Cancer, a U.S.-based telecast featuring cancer researchers and clinicians and celebrities to raise funds for translational cancer research.
Translational research is focused on moving findings into clinical practice; as such, it has potential to improve survival rates for cancer patients. It is aimed at early detection and treatment methods using biomarkers and emerging technology.
In anticipation of media interest in pursuing an angle/story on similar work in translational research that is underway in Canada, the following experts are available to offer comment.
Dr. Victor Ling, President and Scientific Director, Terry Fox Research Institute
Dr. Anne-Marie Mes Masson, Quebec Node Leader, Terry Fox Research Institute
Dr. Heather Bryant, Vice-President Cancer Control, Canadian Partnership Against Cancer
TFRI and the Canadian Partnership Against Cancer are co-funders of the Early Lung Cancer Detection Study, a national translational research study aiming to recruit 2,700 participants from 8 cities across Canada .The study explores the use of readily accessible and affordable detection techniques to evaluate the effectiveness of identifying individuals at high risk of developing lung cancer. The aim is to identify Canadians who might benefit from more in-depth examination using spiral computed tomography (CT) scanning - a more sensitive, costlier test being studied internationally to determine its effectiveness in reducing mortality. If spiral CT is shown to be valuable in reducing mortality, findings from the Early Lung Cancer Detection Study will provide evidence to help Canada decide how to proceed with an early detection and treatment program as quickly as possible.
The study commenced in fall 2009 and as of September 3, 2010 there are 2,295 participants enrolled in the study and 47 confirmed cases of cancer.
