TORONTO, Oct. 28, 2016 /CNW/ - With a strong foothold in the Canadian media industry, what are the challenges faced by BuzzFeed, VICE and Twitter? The Canadian Journalism Foundation (CJF) explores this question as part of its J-Talks series on November 15 in Toronto.
Established online in the last decade, they were once media's "new kids on the block"—digital disruptors that carved their own niches within the traditional media landscape and were hailed as either saviours or saboteurs: BuzzFeed, with its listicles and viral content; VICE, with its rebel millennial voice and muckraking videos; and Twitter, a platform for citizen journalism, live reporting and feedback, along with free, sharable content.
"Having influenced mainstream media, how are these entities going to stay ahead?" says Simon Houpt, senior media writer for The Globe and Mail, who will moderate the discussion.
Michael Gruzuk, director of news and digital content for VICE Canada; Jennifer Hollett, head of news and government for Twitter Canada; and Craig Silverman, founding editor of BuzzFeed Canada, will join Houpt for this panel.
The discussion is part of the CJF J-Talks series, exploring issues and challenges shaping journalism.
The CJF is grateful for the generosity of J-Talk series sponsor BMO Financial Group and in-kind supporters CNW and CPAC.
