MEDIA ADVISORY - Front-line Public Health Nurses to Hold Information Picket
SAULT STE. MARIE, ON, May 20, 2015 /CNW/ - Front-line Public Health Nurses working for Algoma Public Health will hold an information picket this afternoon prior to attending the Board of Health meeting.
The Ontario Nurses' Association (ONA) members have been trying to negotiate a new contract with Algoma Public Health. While talks continue, ONA has also filed for conciliation in the event that a new contract is not reached.
The nurses will be outside Algoma Public Health on Willow Avenue from 4:45 to 6:00 pm to raise community awareness of their situation. The nurses will have information for the public about what they have experienced over the past few years and their desire to reach a new settlement. Currently, the Public Health Nurses in Algoma are the lowest-paid in the province. The next round of bargaining is scheduled for June 2 and 3.
ONA is the union representing 60,000 registered nurses and allied health professionals, as well as more than 14,000 nursing student affiliates providing care in hospitals, long-term care, the community, public health, clinics and industry.
