Media Advisory - Front-Line Registered Nurses Gather in Toronto: 1,000 ONA
Members Attend Biennial Convention
TORONTO, Nov. 8 /CNW/ - One thousand registered nurses and allied health professionals are gathering at the Royal York Hotel in Toronto tomorrow to attend the Ontario Nurses' Association (ONA) Biennial Convention. The RNs and health care professionals from across Ontario are leaders in their local communities and politically active ONA members.
Over the course of the three-day event, they will conduct ONA business, hear an update from Canadian Federation of Nurses' Unions (CFNU) President Linda Silas, RN and learn from Dr. Steve Robbins, an expert in communications and human rights and equity.
RNs in Ontario face a number of serious challenges right now. RN cuts have totaled more than 2,450 in less than a year, heavy workloads and staffing shortages are leaving RNs concerned about patient safety and, in this midst of this environment, these public-sector health care professionals are being pressed by the provincial government to accept a two-year wage freeze.
ONA is the union representing 55,000 registered nurses and allied health professionals, as well as more than 12,000 nursing student affiliates providing care in Ontario hospitals, long-term care facilities, public health, the community and industry.
