OTTAWA, Nov. 24, 2017 /CNW/ - Her Excellency the Right Honourable Julie Payette, Governor General of Canada, will attend the Canadian Football League's (CFL) 105th edition of the Grey Cup Championship Game at TD Place in Ottawa, on Sunday, November 26, 2017, at 6 p.m.
The Governor General will conduct the coin toss to officially kick off the championship game between the Toronto Argonauts and the Calgary Stampeders.
Earlier this week, Her Excellency and CFL Commissioner Randy Ambrosie welcomed the
Grey Cup at Rideau Hall for public viewing as part of the festivities planned around the championship game. The Grey Cup game is presented in Canada's capital this year on the occasion of the 150th anniversary of Confederation. In October 2012, the trophy was also on display at Rideau Hall to mark the centennial of the Grey Cup Championship Game.
About the Grey Cup and the CFL
In 1909, then-Governor General Earl Grey donated a trophy to the Rugby Football Championship of Canada. Originally, only teams registered with the Canadian Rugby Union were eligible to compete for the trophy, which subsequently became known as the Grey Cup. Over time, Canadian football became markedly different from its rugby origins. The Grey Cup subsequently became the property of the CFL, which had evolved into a professional football league.
