Media Advisory - Governor General to Attend Treaty No. 4 Protocol Ceremony in Fort Qu'Appelle, Saskatchewan Français
OTTAWA, Sept. 12, 2016 /CNW/ - His Excellency the Right Honourable David Johnston, Governor General of Canada, will deliver a speech at the Treaty No. 4 Protocol Ceremony hosted by Chief Lynn Acoose of the Treaty No. 4 Executive Council. The event will take place at the Treaty Four Governance Centre (740 Sioux Avenue) in Fort Qu'Appelle, Saskatchewan, on Tuesday, September 13, 2016, at 1 p.m.
"I'm looking forward to attending the Treaty No. 4 Protocol Ceremony in Fort Qu'Appelle with the Lieutenant Governor of Saskatchewan Her Honour the Honourable Vaughn Solomon Schofield, the Chief of the Treaty No. 4 Executive Council Lynn Acoose, and the National Chief of the Assembly of First Nations Perry Bellegarde," said the Governor General. "Together, we will be meeting and engaging with Elders, chiefs from the Treaty No. 4 and members of the community. Treaties lie at the heart of the relationship between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Canadians, and this event commemorating Treaty No. 4 presents us with an important opportunity to strengthen that relationship."
The ceremony will begin with an honour song and a Treaty No. 4 flag song. The Governor General will then address everyone in attendance. The ceremony will conclude with a walking tour of exhibits featuring First Nations' traditions and educational activities on Treaty No. 4 grounds.
About the Treaty No. 4 Protocol Ceremony
The Treaty No. 4 Protocol Ceremony takes place every year in the Qu'Appelle Valley, at Fort Qu'Appelle, during the second week of September. It is a celebration to recognize, discuss and evaluate Treaty No. 4, which was signed at Fort Qu'Appelle on September 15, 1874, by Queen Victoria and the Cree and Saulteaux First Nation band governments.
