OTTAWA, Dec. 2, 2015 /CNW/ - His Excellency the Right Honourable David Johnston, Governor General of Canada, will open the first session of the 42nd Parliament of Canada with the Speech from the Throne. The event will take place on Friday, December 4, 2015, at 2:30 p.m. in the Senate Chamber, on Parliament Hill.
The Speech from the Throne will be broadcast live on television and online at http://parlvu.parl.gc.ca. One of the governor general's most important constitutional duties is to ensure that Canada always has a prime minister and a government in place that has the confidence of Parliament. As The Queen's representative in Canada, the governor general summons, prorogues and dissolves Parliament, delivers the Speech from the Throne, and gives Royal Assent to acts of Parliament.
