MEDIA ADVISORY - HMCS Montcalm sailors exercise their right to Freedom of the
City
QUEBEC CITY, Oct. 28 /CNW Telbec/ - As part of the Canadian Navy 100th anniversary, the crew of Her Majesty's Canadian Ship (HMCS) Montcalm will exercise it's right to the Freedom of the City in front of Quebec City Hall on Saturday, October 30 2010, at 10 a.m. Quebec City Deputy Mayor, Ms Michelle Morin-Doyle and Lieutenant Commander Étienne Landry, Commander of HMCS Montcalm, will attend this unique and colourful ceremony. Nearly 150 sailors will parade through the streets of Quebec City with weapons and flags, to the beat of the unit's band.

First granted in 1748, Freedom of the City was originally a British honour. When a military unit, through loyal and valiant service, had earned the trust and respect of the citizenry, the city council could grant the unit Freedom of the City, permitting its troops to parade in the city streets, for all time, « with drums beating, colours flying and bayonets fixed ».
HMCS Montcalm first exercised its right to Freedom of the City in 1995.
