Media Advisory - Hospitality workers to protest Parq Casino
VANCOUVER, Sept.15, 2017 /CNW/ - Unifor members from across Canada in the hospitality and gaming sector will converge on the Parq Casino today to demand the company bargain a fair contract with workers.
"The casino is expanding massively and it should be a reason for workers to celebrate, but instead dozens of workers are facing an uncertain future," said Jerry Dias, Unifor National President. "Paragon Gaming's greed could come back to haunt them and their customers."
WHAT: Rally for a fair contract for Parq Casino workers (formerly Edgewater Casino)
WHEN: Friday, September 15 at 5 p.m. Pacific Time
WHERE: 760 Pacific Boulevard, Vancouver
WHO: Unifor members in the hospitality and gaming sector
Paragon Gaming is relocating Edgewater Casino to a new $600 million facility in late September. The company has guaranteed Unifor members in food and beverage service a job with the non-union provider at the new site, U.S. firm Elizabeth Blau. Blau refuses to guarantee similar working hours, conditions, or vacation. Benefits that the Edgewater Casino workers have enjoyed for fifteen years will also be reduced under Elizabeth Blau.
Unifor is Canada's largest union in the private sector, representing more than 315,000 workers in every major area of the economy. The union advocates for all working people and their rights, fights for equality and social justice in Canada and abroad, and strives to create progressive change for a better future.
