Media Advisory - IBC releasing scientific study of impact of major earthquake in Canada - Insurance industry advances national strategy to prepare Canadians, protect the economy
Canada not prepared for The Big One
TORONTO, Oct. 28, 2013 /CNW/ -
WHAT: | A new Insurance Bureau of Canada (IBC) study conducted by AIR Worldwide, global experts in catastrophe modeling, will be released by IBC on October 29. The study provides an analysis of the impact of a major earthquake in British Columbia (western scenario) and in the Quebec City-Montreal-Ottawa corridor (eastern scenario). It also looks at overall economic losses and the domino effect on the Canadian economy.
After a review of the study, IBC spokespeople will address the need to advance a national strategy on earthquake response.
WHY: | The AIR study is the first scientific evaluation of the earthquake threat to Canada in more than 20 years. The study leaves no doubt that we are not prepared to handle a major earthquake that could happen at any time in Canada and that the economic impact would be significant.
