available to comment on post-earthquake situation in Indonesia

OTTAWA , Sept. 30 /CNW Telbec/ - At approximately 5pm local time, a 7.6 magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Sumatra, Indonesia , causing widespread destruction in the island capital of Padang and surrounding region.

Indonesian Red Cross staff and volunteers were immediately deployed to assist with search and rescue, provide emergency first aid and open evacuation centres. 20 disaster response teams have been dispatched to assess the damage and emergency supplies are being prepared by Red Cross chapters across the island for distribution to the thousands of people affected by this disaster.

Canadian Red Cross delegates working in Indonesia as part of the 2004 tsunami recovery program will be available for interviews on the developing situation in Indonesia as of 4pm EDT .
