THUNDER BAY, ON, Jan. 30, 2012 /CNW/ - Students at Lakehead University in Thunder Bay will be participating in the National Day of Action which will protest the chronic underfunding of public services and the rising cost of post-secondary education in Canada on February 1 at the Lakehead University's Agora.
The 'Education is a Right' rally is part of the Canadian Federation of Students National Day of Action, where students at post-secondary institutions from coast to coast will call on the Federal and provincial governments to develop and implement a comprehensive vision for high quality and accessible post-secondary education.
As a result of high fees, students across Canada collectively owe $15 billion to the Government of Canada, and billions more to the Government of Ontario. Students are also concerned that the Liberal tuition grant implemented this January excludes two-thirds of all students, in contrast to their election platform. In December, students submitted more than 40,000 petitions calling on the Liberals to convert the grant into a real tuition fee reduction.
